Light up, Lift up and Don’t be afraid to SHINE

So, we’ve spoken about this before. The fear of ‘shining’. What does this mean? What does this entail?

A Christian friend said to me at her local church service today, this theme was also discussed.

What often amazes me is that at their core, so many religions share fundament core values such as love, peace, hope and an ultimate faith in the ‘divine source’. The term ‘religion’ often just acts as a means of different people reaching their own ‘enlightenment’ or ‘path’ and if that path helps maintain their faith, brings them closer to a sense of meaning…then what is the harm in that?

I thought it was apt to discuss it here, given that today is officially Diwali, the Festival of Lights, in the Hindu calendar.

As a child, I was painfully shy. I would still classify myself as ‘shy’ though age, experience and wisdom has helped me to spread partial wings and leaving a shell that remains, if I ever need it to retreat to.

One other thing that happened as I was growing up is that I became scared to ‘shine’. There may be some people that can relate to this. We don’t want to appear different; we would rather hide in the shadows and be a ‘sheep’ than step out into the unknown and embrace the things that help us stand out, even if it was to the detriment of our own success. I was scared of being unique.

Diwali is a time for rebirth, rejuvenation and reflection. It reminds me that we don’t need to wait for the new year to make a new resolution (however, today is obviously convenient because The Festival of Lights symbolises new beginnings anyway…!).

Because each and every moment is a moment of rejuvenation, an opportunity to change. Though obvious, the idea hit me again today and emphasised one important point.

So many of us are victims to making ’empty promises’. You know what I mean:

When ‘x’ happens….I’ll do ‘y’

We wait for ‘the perfect time’, we make up excuses and dim our light.

STOP. Today is your day to ‘Face A Fear Everyday’. Today is your day to not ‘shelf your light’ but in fact to shine your light.

Embrace what you have to offer the world, we’re all different. Be proud to be unique.

Here Comes The Sun……after the rain!

Times of peace are usually found moments after intense sorrow or hardship. Much like the rays of hope that emerge, there is always a brighter sky after prolonged rain.

So today: what have you been mourning? What calm and peace can you find that lingers long after you’ve finished fighting your battles. Have faith that hope will wash away your past wounds and allow the sun to rise once more.

We’ve heard it all before haven’t we?

‘Live every day as if it was your last’

Sometimes though, that’s easier said than done.

What stops us? Often it’s fear.

Sometimes the fear of failure is so big that we forget to even try!

Sometimes it’s the fear of not being accepted by peers; the fear of rejection by family, friends, peers.

But surely there needs to be a little fear for us to strive for better results or even bigger goals.

Maybe that fear is what we need to make sure we are progressing and stepping out of our comfort zone (within reason, of course…unless you like being a bit of an adrenaline junkie!)

A fulfilled life often consists of a balance between: necessary certainty in our lives (we are creatures of habit, we like a schedule) combined with bursts of necessary uncertainty (these scary things require us to step out of our comfort zone and ‘DO things’!)

There is of course, unnecessary uncertainty – may cause thrills but may not be essential for your personal growth.

I once heard that to differentiate between ‘necessary uncertainty’ and ‘unnecessary certainty’ you should ask yourself the following question:

‘Would I regret not doing this on my deathbed?’

A bit morbid, but does the job into putting things into persepective.

If the answer was ‘yes’, then you have your answer.

No matter how scared the decision makes you, you know that you would regret not doing it in the future.

So today: Set yourself one small act to attain. It may be a tiny baby step in comparison to your ultimate goal, however, as long as you keep moving, you’ll be one step closer to achieving your dream.

So, it’s April…and here in London, you can never really tell whether it will snow one minute or pour with rain the next. One thing is for sure, if you want to have some sunshine, you will have to make your own.

This goes much further than just the weather though! When mood or morale is low, it is up to you to improve it. Maybe not even for everyone else but just for your own sake. Although you may even find, that by improving your own mood, a positive attitude can often be contagious and may even have a cumulative effect!

So Today: Be the most positive person you know and bring a little bit of sunshine to every situation!

Whether you’re a fan of Kanye West or not, one thing will still be true…we’re all striving to achieve something. We may have succeeded in one aspect of our lives, but there is always more we can do or have the desire to achieve.

This is a similar post to last week’s post on Charlie Brown’s song, ‘On My Way’. Here, we are aware of the end point, e.g. a set of exams, a deadline, maybe an interview that we need to prepare for. We may be working hard for it but we know there is more we can do and that there is room for improvement during the process.

Don’t lose sight of the end goal, stay focused and when you feel like quitting, remember why you started.

One last thing, a lot of the time we are too fixated on the final goal; life does not work out how we plan. You may put everything into preparing for an interview but still be unsuccessful.

Remember to enjoy the journey because that’s where we learn the most.

So today: Know your destination & enjoy the view whilst you ride!
